INTERVIEW 1

VPM Classes is proud to introduce our student, Divyum Sharma. She has secured AIR 06 in IIT JAM 2009 (Mathematics).

1.    How do you feel after your JAM 2009 success? What factors contributed to your success?
I am feeling very high about my performance in IIT JAM 2009. I had worked hard and was expecting a good rank, but 6th rank was a pleasant surprise. The factors which have contributed to my success are my teachers, my college and VPM Classes.

2.    How did you find the IIT JAM 2009 paper as compared to previous year papers?
The IIT JAM 2009 paper for Mathematics was tougher as compared to previous year papers. Overall, I attempted half of objective questions and a good portion of the subjective questions, but I don’t remember the exact number.

3.    Which study material or books did you refer to?
VPM Classes material and test papers (especially objective questions) were good and sufficient for most topics. For Calculus, I had referred a book by Thomas & Finney.

4.    What is the difference between IIT-JAM & B.Sc. level college exams? Do you think VPM Classes helped you in getting practice in the right direction?
B.Sc. level exams are very simple and often one does not need deep knowledge of the topic. But, IIT JAM is more analytical and understanding of concepts is very essential. VPM Classes helped me bridge the gap between theory and application of concepts by providing a wide variety of problems.

5.    What other exams did you appear for? Did JAM preparation help you to prepare for the same?
I have appeared only for IIT-JAM.

6.    How do you think VPM Classes helped you to get success?
VPM Classes study material and test series was very good and contributed a lot during my preparation. The comprehensive study material & solved examples gave me a lot of practice and clarity of thought. The VPM test series which was on the pattern of IIT JAM boosted my confidence.

7.    What are your long term goals?
I am interested in doing Research in Mathematics.

8.    Any tips or advice for IIT-JAM aspirants.
Hard work and help from the right source is very important. VPM Classes had provided the right direction and helped me to understand the concepts easily. My college and teachers also motivated me to do better in my higher studies.

INTERVIEW 2

VPM Classes is proud to introduce our student, Anirban Bhattacharyya. He has secured AIR 06 in IIT JAM 2009 (Mathematical Statistics).

1.    Congratulations Anirban, How do you feel after your JAM 2009 success? What factors contributed to your success?
I am very happy with my result. I had expected a rank under 50 but was surprised to see my result with rank under 10. Although I started my preparation by January 2009 only, VPM Classes study material helped me stay organized in my studies. I prepared a study schedule which I followed in a disciplined manner. The test series provided by VPM Classes was also very helpful and I attempted the same as per schedule. Analyzing performance of the test series helped me to understand my improvement areas.

2.    How did you find the IIT JAM 2009 paper as compared to previous year papers? What was the strategy while attempting the paper?
The subjective questions in JAM 2009 paper were tougher as compared to previous year papers while the objective questions were easy. My strategy was to attempt the objective questions in the first 1 hour and then solve the subjective questions. Overall, I attempted around 72 marks of objective questions and 100 marks of subjective questions.

3.    How many hours/months had you spend for IIT JAM preparation?

As mentioned above, I have put in 4 months of studies for IIT JAM preparation. Since, I was working I could just spare time for maximum 4 hours daily.

4.    Which study material or books did you refer to?
VPM Classes study material of theory, question bank and test series was self sufficient.
I also referred to the following books:
a)    Calculus: Thomas & Finney
b)    Linear Algebra: Hoffman & Kunze
c)    Probability: Miller & Freund

5.    How do you think VPM Classes help you to get success?
VPM Classes is definitely an important contributor to my success. The theory material was very structured and concise which provided me the right direction throughout my preparation. Since I had less time for studies, books could not help me much and VPM Classes material and test papers provided me the required assistance.

VPM Test Series of 12 mock papers (which were on IIT JAM pattern) was very helpful as it gave me the actual feeling of attempting the main exam. Also, the solutions to previous year IIT JAM papers provided by VPM Classes were extremely helpful.

6.    What is the difference in level between IIT-JAM & B.Sc. /B.E. college exams?
My motivation to pursue higher studies in Statistics was initiated in my B.E. as I had covered the subject there. However, the B.E. exams are not based on application of concepts. On the other hand, for IIT JAM one needs to have an application oriented approach while preparing.  VPM Classes study material and test series helped me get a feel of the application oriented approach of IIT JAM paper.

7.    What other exams did you appear for? Did JAM preparation help you to prepare for the same?
I have given only IIT-JAM 2009 and not appeared for any other exams. But I feel that JAM preparation helps you with other competitive exams as well.

8.    What are your long term goals?
I am not sure but my interest lies in doing Ph.D. which maybe from a university abroad.

9.    Any tips or advice for IIT-JAM aspirants.

My advice for IIT JAM aspirants would be –
a) Start as early as possible (at least before 6 months). Do not leave the preparation to the end.
b) Be very disciplined to your approach while preparing.
c) As I mentioned above, it’s important to study in the right direction for JAM. If you are serious about IIT JAM, get the right guidance and the right study material. For me, VPM Classes study material provided a well rounded coverage of the theory and concepts and helped me cover the vast IIT JAM syllabus in an organized manner. Also, attempting the test series and analyzing the performance of the same helped me immensely.

INTERVIEW 3

VPM Classes is proud to introduce our student, Pragati Chaturvedi. She has secured AIR 89 in IIT JAM 2009 and AIR  70 in JEST 2009 (Physics).

1.       How do you feel after your JAM 2009 and JEST success? What factors contributed to your success?

I feel very happy for my IIT JAM and JEST result. I owe my success to the comprehensive coaching provided by VPM Classes and a systematic and regular study pattern to crack these entrance exams. I thank VPM Classes for their support to help me get a good rank.

2.       How did you find the IIT JAM 2009 paper as compared to previous year papers? What was the strategy while attempting the paper?

IIT JAM 2009 (Physics) paper was easier as compared to previous year papers. Objective and Subjective questions were both easy. My strategy was not to attempt any question which could lead to negative marking. I had attempted the objective questions in 35-40 minutes and the remaining time I was solving subjective questions. Due to practice of the test papers provided by VPM Classes, I got a chance to develop a good strategy for the final IIT JAM 2009 paper.

3.       How many hours/months had you spend for IIT JAM preparation?

I was a regular student in my IIT JAM and JEST preparation. Starting from session in July 2008 till the day of the exam – 3rd May 2009, I was preparing for IIT JAM paper.

4.       Which study material or books did you refer to?

VPM Classes study material both for theory and test papers were my main source to guide my studies. I also referred to the following sources:

a)       Electrodynamics – David Griffith

b)       Modern Physics- Arthur Beiser

c)       Schaum Series

d)       Previous year solved IIT JAM question papers provided by VPM Classes

I think VPM Classes is the best coaching center in India for IIT JAM preparation and also for other M.Sc./Phd. Entrance exams. VPM Classes theory material and guidance were very good and were 100% relevant for IIT JAM and JEST preparation. The mock test papers provided by VPM Classes were very powerful and gave me a very good practice. Specially the objective questions of mock test papers were excellent. Previous year solved IIT JAM and JNU papers provided by VPM Classes helped me to become familiar with the level of IIT JAM paper.

6.       What is the difference in level between IIT-JAM & B.Sc. /B.E. college exams?

B.Sc. level exams are theoretical where one needs to memorize a lot. While IIT JAM is more conceptual and 90% of the questions are numerical and not theoretical.

7.       What other exams did you appear for? Did JAM preparation help you to prepare for the same?

I appeared for JEST for admission into Integrated Ph.D. Physics. I have also appeared for Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and JNU entrance exams for admission into M.Sc. Physics. I want to be an IAS officer. I may start my preparation of IAS while pursuing my M.Sc. from IIT.

9.       Any tips or advice for IIT-JAM aspirants.

Your foundation of studies at 12th and undergraduate level should be good to attempt in IIT JAM. So, read your B.Sc. books thoroughly. Don’t be tensed during your entrance exam preparation or while attempting for IIT JAM or any other entrance exam. Be in a free mood, its hard work and luck which will help you to get a good rank and reach your dreams. Because of the vast syllabus, preparing in the right direction is also very important. I was lucky to get right guidance from the very beginning from VPM Classes.
